A generation of women is discovering ADHD symptoms after 40, often seeking evaluation after a child is diagnosed. Less likely to receive ADHD diagnoses due to a persistent lack of public awareness and cultural gender-bias, women have struggled silently, masking ADHD symptoms that create shame, doubt, and unworthiness, for far too long.
The “masking effect” is one of the most common reasons that women overlook ADHD. Women and girls with ADHD tend to internalize symptoms and hide them. This leads to an under-diagnosis and lack of recognition.
It's important to raise awareness about ADHD in women and girls, so that they can receive the support they need to thrive. Conversations about mental health, tailored to the unique experiences of women with ADHD, make a significant difference.
